Peter's Pet Peeve, for the Week of January 28

Peter's Pet Peeve, for the Week of January 28
Where do I begin, so many Pet Peeves, so little time. The idea for aPeter and Linda Pfann weekly column about Peter's Pet Peeves, really came from Linda (you can blame her).... As so often we would drive around town, and we see something that makes you go WHY.......

As a good Dutch born Canadian guy, (you can always tell a Dutch Guy, but you can't tell them Much), I will always have an opinion and my take on how to fix things around Greater Victoria......

So with Linda's suggestion, My little Pet Peeves have become a concept for a weekly column to look at life, living and events in Greater Victoria and how we can fix some of the minor imperfections in  Victorian Paradise.

Let me give you a
Peter's Pet Peeve
Example.......

 Road Improvement Projects........

  • How Come, that so often after a road improvement project is completed, that within weeks, the very same part of the road is dug up "AGAIN",
  • Why are so many (if not most)  Road Improvement Projects done during the Day.

Oops, that is  really 2 of Peter's Pet Peeves, sorry .... but You get my drift,

Would it not make much more sense:

  • Before anyone starts digging, that who ever does the work also checks with anyone else that may have services in the area to make sure that they all line up their projects to all take place all at the same time....
  • To complete the road improvement projects during the evenings and nights...... That way the road be closed for 8 to 10 hours, with less interruptions,  the project would take less time, reduce risk or danger and in turn lower overall cost....

Peter and Linda Pfann love Greater Victoria and would love it to be the very best it can be, for all of us, So Peter's Pet Peeve is really to find  ways to make our Pfanntastic community even better, and if you have suggestions or ideas to improve our South Vancouver Island Community, we would love to hear them.

Peter -- Oh..I hear you on this one. Recently, in a neighboring town, the road was reconstructed (took about two months) then sealed up and paved. THEN, they cut it up again to correct an issue that (if you could have seen it) was engineered so poorly it was unacceptable and laughable at the same time.  A little better planning could have prevented all this in the first place. Clearly a mistake, the town paid major $$$ to make the correction. Ugh....higher taxes.

Hi Peter, love the caricatures of you and Linda! I am so with you on this one. There is just something wrong with construction on major roads during rush hour. I agree, night time is the best time to work. I do see this here in Portland sometimes, but most times it's right smack at rush hour. Just makes good sense to do this off hours.

Hi Barbara,

It is such a weird thing isn't it that this happens so often something gets fixed to then be redone.... you have to wonder

Hi Cindy,

Thank you the drawing was from a Disney land trip, it seems to me that many projects are planned and done the way thing were done in the 70's, and they are stuck in that era....:)

Ah, Peter, I see you have been up and down Pima Rd here!!!  I actually asked this question to the city and their response was that the different companies who need to install their different lines and such simply don't communicate.  I am SO with you on  this one.

Simple fix - why can't the city/county/municipality contact all the the various interests and advise of the digging.  All the companies would benefit with less costs because they would now be shared and WE wouldn't have to deal with it month after month after month.

Whew, I feel better now, LOL.

Hi Juli,

you just proofed my point and made my day....

how silly, the city is the contractor, but they could not be bothered to ensure to coordinate the work and save us (the tax payers) time money and all kinds of frustration.

Oh Peter, I think you have articulated a pet peeve many of us have in BC - you can't escape the (seemingly endless) road construction.

Hi Karen,

yes road works are a pretty universal frustration. Whch in a way makes you wonder, why is that......

Peter - here's my addition...why do the road projects TAKE SO LONG TO COMPLETE???

Posted by Lisa Hicks, Serving Central and Southern Maine (Hoang Realty) over 8 years ago

HI Lisa,

so true, assuming that the respective cities and their crews know what needs doing and how to do it, is seems odd why some of these jobs take forever to complete and often sit dorment for days if not week on end.....

Hi Joni,

Yes We noticed that you have been missing in action, hope all is well in the Staples Family....the Pet Peeves are not new, but only now did we decide to pick one a week, and see how the response is.... Who knows we might fix a few peeves along the way....;)
