BC Hydro, Smart Meters & 2 Tier Hydro Rate In-equities.

BC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier ratesBC Hydro, Smart Meters & 2 Tier Hydro Rate In-equities.

For Those that live in British Columbia,  Canada (BC), we get our electricity from BC Hydro, and for the most part they do an excellent job providing all of us with the electrical juice we all so much rely on 24/7/365, with out much interruption or concern.......
BC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier rates
Good for us, so why write this blog and why are we more than a little juiced with BC Hydro.......?

Firstly the entire Smart Meter introduction, launch and "you don't have a say in the matter" attitude by which the Smart Meter program is being shoved down to us rubs me very much the wrong way.....

If you watch any of the "The Smart Meter is a good thing" commercials currently running on most local Television Channels...... You will already know th
at these things are being promoted as being some magic potion. Personally, every time some essential service or government uses that good news method, all the hairs on my sizable back stand up and send me warning signals........
My parents told me many times about the Churchill speech, (all is well in Europe) the night before Germany invaded Poland, so I am still a little suspicious about good news announcements from any government (or look a like) entity.

With what has been happening in many if not all areas in the world where these "smart meters" have been installed, there are not very many people  too happy about them...... Why, you ask..... Well, they will change your life and or how you live it.... Higher rates at peak hours, ration periods, if you use to much you will be penalized in some way or fashion......

The pitch that some how these meters will make our lives better does not really come across as realistic or likely, and to be honest the entire energy conservation motivation is not very believable either, which leads me to my second pet peeve with BC Hydro......

Under the motto of encouraging people to conserve energy, BC has a 2 tier energy consumption rate system.....
In Victoria this means;

BC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier rates

  • Step one rate at $ 0.06670 per kW.h up to 688kW.h
  • Step two rate at $ 0.09620 per kW.h thereafter......

Although that seems a fair way of doing things when you initially look at it, but on closer inspection it is not equitable at all........

The issue that this 2 tier rate method totally ignores becomes pretty obvious when considering the reduction of energy consumption objectives.....

BC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier ratesWe all know about how the use of public transportation, and or car pooling reduces waste, consumption and uses the concept of optimizing space and resources......

The huge benefits in saved energy consumption, reduced emissions, reduced wear and waste from worn out equipment etc all work towards savings........ BC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier ratesAll accomplished by sharing resources and creating economies of scale,  a notion that has been totally ignored by BC Hydro in their 2 tier rate system.

This notion of reduction of waste and higher efficiency per space works in larger households as well, however at present this is being penalized with higher rates per KW.h, in some insane logic that that gives BC hydro the right to do so, even though you actually consume less hydro per person.

We belief it is a growing trend in our society where we see a substantial increase in shared households (more people living semi independently under one roof/ one meter). This trend towards more people per household, essentially makes energy consumption more efficient per person, in very much the same way as car pooling makes gas consumption more efficient.

It is our conviction that the consumption per person with say 5 people sharing under one roof and one meter versus the same 5 people each having their own roof/meter will be dramatically different.

Without having scientific proof, I bet that the sum total consumption per person, will be at least 20 - 30 % lower by way of the 5 people sharing space and one hydro meter as in our example above, and as such they should be rewarded for sharing their hydro by way of either a lower rate or at least the same rate as the rest of our community rather than being penalized with a higher rate, as is currently the case.

The currently used system defies logic and common sense, and should require BC Hydro to re-evaluate its 2 tier rate method and practices, to more appropriately allocate rates and charges in an equitable method more reflective of consumption per person in a single household/ meter per location.

The current 2 tier hydro rate method, potentially costs more to thousands of shared households that are less likely to be able to afford these penalizing higher rates, for example;

  • People with large familiesBC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier rates
  • households with more than 2 generations sharing a home (families looking after their parents and even with grand children)
  • homes with legal and or illegal suites or in-law suites
  • smaller group homes, and or boarding houses.
  • families taking in foster children and or people with special needs.
  • people that live and work from home (with or without employees)
  • student and or otherwise higher than average density housing in privately owned property.
  • People with significant health issues with a need for in home care, monitoring equipment and or live in caregivers.

It is our contention that this current 2 tier hydro rate inequity will become even bigger and cause further issues once the "smart meters" become effective and start dictating what rates will be charged at certain times of the day, again ignoring the number of people in a household.

BC Hydro Smart meters and 2 tier ratesWe typically do not get this outspoken about issues, however we feel strongly that both the method in which people that share households  are being penalized with higher BC Hydro 2 tier rates and the entire smart meter issue, very much affect the quality of life and personal lifestyle decisions now and in the future for many families in BC and Greater Victoria.

BC Hydro, Smart Meters & 2 Tier Hydro Rate In-equities. We would love to hear your thoughts and opinion on the matter.

Hey! Don't sugar coat it! LOL! We started using smart meters last May. It meant rearranging our lives to adapt our usage to 'friendly' times. Then a couple of weeks ago we get a letter basically saying OOPS. Some of the meters were not sending back info so they had not been using the new rates. They will send us another letter when they get the issue solved to let us know the meters are on LOL. I was just a little ticked to say the least.

Hi Janice,

the enitre logic of these smart meters and how they potentially force lifestyle changes is a big deal to many people

Peter & Linda -

In San Antonio they are talking about that. We already have peak and off peak water, but energy is coming soon. It does mean we have to learn how to re-arrange our schedules. I know it seems harsh for families in the most difficult of situations, but we are at a point, at least in the US, where we overuse electricity. With all the tech gadgets there just isn't enough and either we conserve now, run out, risk more radiation with nuclear, or depend more on foreign oil, or have more oil spill disasters.  None of the options are good, so saving is great. People will find a way to manage, they always do.  Hopefully they will come up with a system that has some exemptions like we do for seniors, etc.

Great post!

HI Peter and Linda - All of Ontario has been moving to smart meters over the past year.  I'm not sure if the entire province has converted over yet.  Ontario uses a time of day usage concept.  One of three rate categories (low price, mid price, high price) is charged based on the time of day.

Posted by FN LN about 9 years ago

HI Cathy,

Cute profile picture, the challenge with using charging extra money is that it penalizes those that can least afford it, if these smart meters are so smart, let them figure out how many poeple live in a property and charge and ration based on the number of people.

how about all those living by them selves and consuming like there are 3 living in the house....

Hi Marc,

that is what I mean,  the hydro company deciding how we are supposed live our life, really bothers me.

Peter and Linda - smart meters are already in place here in Ontario and Barrie tells me it is nothing more than another way of hiding a rate increase. He supplied the information for a post on them here in Ontario showing some cost scenarios  (AR search - smart meters Clulow)

Hi Kathy,

we looked at  Barrie's post and information from other sources even european,  the whole concept that by having different rates for different use levels and penalize higher consumption but ignoring the number of people in a house (for example) is nothing short of criminal, and very short sighted, but once again we (the consumer paying for it) accept these crazy double standards as if it is nothing......

Peter and Linda - while I see your side of the argument their argument would be by your own example the cost per person is also likely less

Barrie would know better than I as he has our usage tracked from when we were a four generation 8 member houshold to now with only two of us living here.

Great Blog.. :) we all very much have concerns over the so called Smart Grid. We are getting transmitters placed on every home and Biz. here in BC.   I'M GLAD THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS.  and thakful there are groups like citizens for safe technology. org. . That people  can become a party of stopping the smart meters. On top of the radiation we'll be exposed to. Dirty electricity is very much a health issue with wireless smart  meters/grid..MESH NETWORK

We have 21 year old's woman getting  breast cancer now. To bad no one is  taking the International Agency for Research on CANCER SERIOUSLY.. WIRELESS IS 2B possible carcinogenic to humans.. We should be warning people not to  place laptops ,this breast cancer, and other types of cancer too. People can't get caught  up in the  smoke screen weather smart meters are bad. What about 5 years from now. When 15 year olds are dying from cancer. How will they ever recover with out a radiation free environment?? Will we still be sucked in  to Health Canada's claim there are no known health effects.,.Read the obituaries .Germany has banned wi-fi  in public. There waiting for scientist to prove without a reasonable doubt. This new technology is causing  people to die..
SMART METERS ARE A SCAM Check out the Common sense Canadian..,2933,351378,00.html

Here's a 21 one year old  with breast  cancer. Should 21 year old's have breast cancer,. Should this common in  today's society??"

I'm sure we all saw the 26 year old with breast cancer on cbc Oct. 31/11

Smart meters - excuse me, frequency delivery devices -  devalue property in many ways.

It's not the meters. It's the frequencies.

The frequencies are illegal under Safety Code 6 Federal EMF Law as of September 24th 2010. Health Canada is stonewalling this simple fact. That is all about potential criminal negligence. The frequencies cause electrical induction. That  is against the law.

As any reputable hand held monitor readily reveals, these frequencies depolarize or rapid flip your central survival tool, the nerves in your body, & in the bodies of all biological creatures. The nerves are overtaken & flipped on and off at top speed, just like a forced strobe light effect, on & off -1.84 billion times a second. How often should this happen? 1570 times a second when awake and 1 time a second asleep.

These frequencies violate the laws of nature as well as the laws of the land by turning your house wiring into a whole house microwave, by turning you & your family & pets into an involuntary conductor of electromagnetism & by turning each one of your body cells into a fractal antenna.

These frequencies excite atoms & molecules, which in turn heats biological tissue (cooks you slowly) & can depolarize nerve & muscles. As of September 24th 2010 was when Health Canada was obliged to change the application of the law & when Industry Canada, the enforcement arm of Health Canada was obliged to use that changed application of the law to prevent any and all installation of these frequency enabling delivery devices.

It's not just humans, its the fact that these 927 MHz frequencies are so powerful that they are able to go round the globe. It's the fact that the farther the microwaves are sent the more they jack them up to send them along ageing, leaky transmission lines never meant to withstand this kind of power density load anymore than your own human grid was meant to. It's the fact that we are also being charged for all of the leakage along the transmission route. It's the fact that as controlling interest shareholders in Hydro we OWN both the analog meters AND the corporation. The private sector is taking away & dismantling BOTH, the meter you own & the corporation you own.. It's the issue of pre-emptive financial penalization for failure to purchase radio wave radiating chipped appliances to monitor all of your actions. It's the arrogance of a corporate run system able & willing to remotely adjust/shut off any one of 30+ "appliances" which you thought all along were YOUR appliances. It is the reality of FOLLOW THE MONEY, the real money, data reselling for trillion$, your personal info which you own, while you are put on on energy rationing not for overall usage, only for WHEN used, for 3 to 4 times the rate for time of use, which saves not one bit of energy since we all need to eat & wash & bath & launder not to mention keep oxygen machines & dialysis & pacemakers running smoothly which are dangerously interfered with by these frequencies & which come with a warning to AVOID these frequencies. Exactly HOW?

If you eat supper in the evening instead of at 3 a.m. you save money? When did everywhere become the USSR? Meanwhile the private sector of BC Hydro makes the real money & penalizes you after keeping the meter reader salaries structured into your bill, then firing the readers, then charging you to buy into the illusion of safety by relocating the meter, then charging you a fee to take away your own analog meter to recycle the metal, for a mechanical meter good for 30 to 50 years, more with recallibration and substitute a meter good for 8 to 12 years due to the susceptibility of electronics to weather!  This is about a a structured taxation scheme with no upper limits plus a fee for purchase of the s/meter they will then say they "own". It's about subcontracted abuse of Hydro rights of easement which constitute trespass for the purpose of the installation of a surveillance device. It's the top down Orwellian command & control, the forcible exposure to radiation declared unsafe by the WHO. It's the link to one's TV, computer, lightbulbs, & the ability to observe all personal habits via total invasion of privacy. It's the issue of the use of the word "mandatory", never mind that the BC "Clean" energy Act (why not "Dirty" since this microwave radiation pollution is filthy & destroys all pollinators, indeed navigational, echo-locational & migratory creatures' ability to find their way?)

The so called Energy Act does not even state that any "WIRELESS" device is mandated in the first place, only that the meter needs to measure usage more often. Hey I can do THAT! BC Hydro already tells you how to read your own analog meter. I am happy to read it more often & mail them the figures. It's the fact that the tactic of legislative closure was used to marginalize our utility watchdog, the BCUC, & to push through legislation even though the law disallows this same tactic of closure to be used when any public funds are involved. It's the fact that another 9 billion dollars of ours are yet to be plundered by the private sector of Hydro for piggy backing more radiating infrastructure on to the rest of the grid in BC. easily multiplied and altered kind and type of frequencies. And lastly, its not only the fact that while the Hydro Honchos  say they cannot keep up with OUR electricity demands, out of the other side of the same mouth = they are not only granting large bonuses to CEOS while running the biz into the ground as a prelude to privatize it & then sell it off, BUT they are using the dam water for the Hydro dams we own by diverting up to one third of it from our largest reservoirs and using it for toxic frakking for 800 ft deep drilling for gas at the same time they have granted permission for the next 20 years to buddy corporations without so much as a word to US, THE OWNERS.

Do I sound a tad annoyed? Do I think we are entitled to stop all of this. You bet your analog meter I do.

Secure the analog you own. Installers are on the prowl.

HI Molly or Moxie,

We are certainly not in favor of these new meter that are suppose to do all these amazing things.....

I wonder if a savvy lawyer would be willing to take it on as a class action suite, as it is increasingly clear that these things are not healthy, not cost saving and not at all beneficial for the average consumer in any way....

Hydro is opening itself up to major litigation now or in the future, when people will have health issues that can be traced to the meters.

We are being railroaded into this, and every time I have contacted Hydro they have a great deflection system all ready......

We  call it "baffle the consumer with sheer volume of none-sense", and the are likely to go away, which in many cases people do, because there really is no proper consumer advocacy organization in Canada with enough cloud and influence to accomplish anything

There are already several lawsuits underway.

the real quesiotn is how many will be harmed by all of this before anything is done to stop a corporatin that is violating the law in so many ways. If there is no mandate to sinstall wireless, what gives them the right to do so?

Check out the article with this link, which is filled with misinformation about the self proclaimed "rights" of Corix and Hydro and our supposed lack of rights.

For more about the illegality question regarding these frequencies, there is a Canadian who is the top world heat specialist who is able to "see" even the so called "safe" wireless  frequencies in real time as they are heating human body - which is illegal.

Go to the website of Curtis Bennett. He is currently involved in an investigation of Health Canada, etc., regarding negligence and potential criminal negligence.

Click on EMF education to see declarations by expert witnesses for a trialregarding Wifi frequency far less lethal than those enabled by smart meters.

For more info and a cautionary document see below:
