"How Does This Affect US?"

How Does THIS Affect US?"How Does THIS Affect US?"

and

"What Do We Need To Do, Know and or Have To Eliminate or Minimize the Negative Impact,
and or Optimize The Positive Impact for US?"

We are often using the above questions in response to media reports.  The recent Irene storm was one of these typical examples of a media frenzy and when we did ask these questions.

We get a few days of nothing but Irene in the media, and then they go on to the next big thing....

It is all important, and we don't want to create the impression we are not sensitive to the troubles and problems of others, but it leaves many under the impression that this is what the world is all about, and clearly it is not.

Here in Victoria BC (for example), while our media was full of Irene and how the East Coast was preparing for and experiencing this big storm, Here in Victoria,  the sun was out, we had a near perfect weekend, and many enjoyed the parks, beaches and trails of the community.........(or what we call an average day in paradise). An Average Day in Victoria BC

The point being, yes it is important to be informed and aware, but don't let stuff that has no real impact on US, affect US.... In fact we would suggest to make that a kind of a Filtering Question on all news and media "How Does THIS Affect US?"

The "THIS" is the event, the action, report, the media announcement, both the good and the bad etc.

The "US" are your direct and indirect loved ones, your family and friends, your block, street, neighbourhood, job, city etc.

If "THIS" affects your "US", take every possible step to eliminate and or minimize any negative outcome, and or do as much as possible to optimize any positive outcome for "US".

Let's test this for a moment; "the media reported" during the past month in North America and parts of the World, on these events:

  1. How Does THIS Affect US?A near total collapse of the American governments ability to agree on anything and how to pay its bills, and a political stand off that (according to the media) paralyzed North America.
  2. A melt down in the Financial World, with record swings in a variety of the stocks, bonds, gold, currency etc. etc.
  3. A near financial and political collapse in Italy and Spain under their financial troubles.
  4. Hurricane Irene "potentially" wiping out the East Coast of the USA and Canada.

Now, we are never going to change the objectives of the current media trend (big hype, sells lots of advertising, at least that appears to be the current business model in the media).

But what we can and need to do, is ask the filtering question, ("How Does THIS Affect US?") add local context, local impact, local solutions, and local opportunities and inspiration for the benefit of those that are left wondering how to move forward and determine how to proceed with one Action Question......
"What Do We Need To Do, Know and or Have To Eliminate or Minimize the Negative Impact, and or Optimize the Positive Impact for US?"

So when you Apply the Filtering question ("How Does THIS Affect US?") to the above events...... what is your response and what if anything was your action plan from each of these previous events.....

During the same time in which these 4 rather Big events happened, we received and reviewed nearly 500 veryHow Does THIS Affect US? positive and inspirational reports and articles, from 100's of members in our Active Rain Community all over Canada and the USA filled with Good News, and reports Real Estate and Economic Recovery taking place in cities, counties, neighbourhoods,  provinces and states everywhere.

From what we gather from many of the writers and their truly positive and inspirational content, that many communities are really not in any real trouble at all, and in fact things are improving and happening all over the continent.

Often it seems that many communities and people are affected most by the perception and mis or half information created by the "established media".  Creating the impression that a disaster or event elsewhere is having a real and immediate impact locally. This is off course not true but the affects of the media "frenzied reports" leaves doubt, lingering questions and diminished confidence in ones future well-being..

There is no question that there are issues and we have all experienced the impact of the recent economic, political and environmental events in some way, However after the past month, in a way we can now look at all those events and say.....

We have already Survived the Mayan Prediction of the End of the World.                  (oops they where out by a Year).......

Conclusion....... We Can and Will Conquer any and all Challenge that Comes Our Way!

We Can and Will Conquer any and all challenges that come our Way!

Peter and Linda, I strongly feel that Real Estate will rebound in North America.  In the States, they still have to correct for the increases caused by negligent lending practices, but all in all, we all want to own a home, and owning homes will still be a good investment over time.

There is no doubt we live in an interconnected world, and markets are affected by global events, but local happenings often have the deepest impact on our daily lives.

HI Chris,

As you know we just finished the review and results of about 500 articles, that all have one theme, sharing good news and their respective real estate recovery... About 90% of the articles came from The USA, so it is safe to say that in many areas in the States they are already experiencing significant recovery, it is just very much being under-reported, or all the negative stuff is being over reported (take a pick)

This Good News Reporting Experience  has really been an eye opener for us in many ways.....

Including the fact that only 2 or 3 (including yourself) Canadian Realtors reported any Good News from their communities.

Hi Norma,

So very very true, it is also true that so many big, national and international issues and events, never really have any impact on our daily lives although they are huge in both the media and the bigger scheme of things.

I can't stand to watch the news.  What possible good could come from exposoing ourselves to so much negative.  You're so right - we WILL overcome the challenges that come our way - what other choice do we have??

Hi Karen,

We are often baffled by the sheer energy extended and efforts made to share the negative and worst of what we as people and society create, cause and experience.

the past month was truly a breath of fresh air......

Peter and Linda,

I could not agree more. My wife went to the grocery store before Irene came through our area and there was a huge buying spree on water, batteries and generators. Folks were at a large box store standing out by a truck taking their generator to buy before it was even unloaded. The panic which besets people is absolutely amazing.

HI Cal,

We care a lot about our community and the well-fare of people and we would never suggest that they do not prepare for any potential harm or danger.

But Irene, was one of these examples, where obviously the public responsed to the media and it then jumped all over it some more and this repeated itself a few times and became this over the top panic like environment.

Peter and Linda- I agree with Cal a case in point was last weeks possibility of Tornadoes across Ontario ..... because we have had a couple of bad ones and no one was warned we now get inundated with warnings if there is the smallest probability of one and people start to panic.

How long before people stop listening to the Chicken Little's of the world yelling the sky is falling.

Hi Kathy,

thanks for the mention in # 74, we appreciate it.

We as community leaders (and as realtors we are high profile people) we have a great opportunity to guide and assist many people to a more balanced and appropriate approach and response towards potential and even real disasters.
