Age in Place Safely for Victoria Seniors

Age In Place in VictoriaAge in Place Safely for Victoria Seniors

Aging in place "safely" is a high priority with many zoomers, boomers and seniors in Victoria.

With many preventable accidents happening in people's own home each and every year there are many valid reasons to spend time, attention and possibly some resources to ensure that you remain safe regardless of your age and or mobility challenges.

One of the more common questions we are asked by the aging and or family members goes something like this.

"Yes, we want to stay in our own home as long as possible, but what if any adjustments should we make to  make sure we, and or our parents are safe and comfortable in our / their own home.

Here is a short list of some of the issues that you may want to consider to assess if your home may require some adaptations to re main safe and comfortable for you and your family.

Are you and all other family members safe and comfortable with:

  • Getting in, out and around the house and property
  • Using stairs, steps and or the various types of floor coverings
  • Using the Kitchen
  • Using the Bathroom
  • Getting out of a chair or bed
  • Using closets and or storage areas
  • Doing laundry
  • Using the telephone or answering the phone
  • Controlling lights, ventilation and heating

When asked if we know of some resources we typically refer to 2 excellent guides created and published by CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) which are available free from their website at http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca or can be ordered by phone at 1-800-668-2642.

The first one is an easy to follow personal guide and is called "Maintaining Seniors' Independence Through Home Adaptations" (A Self-Assessment Guide) 24 pages with great tips, suggestions and easy to follow directions, printed in a larger font with great illustrations.

The second more extensive guide is called " Maintaining Senior's Independence, A guide to Home Adoptations"  is over 80 pages and offers a great set of checklists and easy to follow forms that you can complete on your own or with the assistance of a family member of trusted friend. This guide is more detailed and

If you live in or around Greater Victoria BC, would like to age in place and would like to receive a FREE copy of either one or both these guides, please feel free to give us a call or send us an email, and it would be our pleasure to deliver a copy to you.

Hi Paul,

thanks for your comments, we have similar certification programs in BC Canada but there are very few contractors that specialize in senior focussed adaptations. I will check it out, thanks
