For all those people that have in the past (or even currently) "borrow" and or download other people's materials.......
There is a price to pay, Len Harley, is an amazing resource and fellow Realtor who knows a lot about Copyrights, and she provided us with just one more example of how this might bite the borrower, eventually...
Also today we read an article on line that indicated that this same type of software can and will trace illegal downloads of movies, audio, gif's, and clip art..... Better be safe than sorry, read this post and consider the consequences if in the past you may have been using a few easy clicks to get some (not so) Free Stuff.
Thank you Lenn for a great bit of information...
COPYRIGHT ALERT!! IF YOU THINK THAT THOSE PHOTOS THAT YOU COPIED AND PASTED LAST YEAR ARE SAFE, THINK AGAIN!!
We're all familiar with marking our photos and images. However, often the marks can be cropped or, as in the case of my maps, of which 95% contain a mark, i.e., lennharley.com. I am not amused when an agent's defense of their copyright infringement is "I didn't know it belonged to anyone. HA! At the bottom of most of my maps is a clear lennharley.com. Anyone who entered that domain into their browser would see a web page http://www.lennharley.com .
ACTIVERAIN NETWORK SYNERGY AT WORK. Inspired by e-mail from Jennifer Sherrouse, an agent in Atlanta, I thought it time to put out a warningto ActiveRain members that, what some of us have been predicting would occur for years is gaining speed. Jennifer received an ALERT from CRS advising members to remove photos copied from the CRS newsletter from their web sites. I suspect that all CRS members received the same ALERT. Thanks to sophisticated software that tracks and matches images on the Internet, "Stock photo agencies have started using photo recognition software to search the Internet for infringement."
"Many industry observers believe unauthorized uses of stock photography and illustration costs distributors and image creators hundreds of thousands of dollars a month, if not millions.". . . . More.
HERE COMES THE JUDGE. Clearly, the use of this software will enable photo and graphic image copyright owners to track infringements effectively. As I have warned before, law firms are expanding their copyright litigation services and this software will enable them to identify law breakers with more efficiently. Before the use of this type of software, I relied on Google images to identify copyright violators. It worked but, being labor intensive (mine), not efficient and quite time consuming. I went to digital image recognition tracking about a year ago.
THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY REMAIN THE SAME. To be safe, and everyone knows how risk averse I am, if you didn't create it, don't use it. Be careful when using FREE photo stocking companies. Just because it's free doesn't mean it's yours to be used. Some are. Some are not.
